About Us
Bergen Pediatric Therapy Center was founded by Victor Wang, a parent of an autistic child, and Lisa Koo, a NJ and NY licensed occupational therapist.
Lisa Koo, a mother of three children, began her career in business and received a B.S. degree in Marketing and International Business at New York University. She then graduated with a Master's degree in Occupational Therapy from New York University. Her work history consists of working in the pediatric department of the Rusk Rehabilitation at NYU Medical Center. There, she worked with children with various congenital disorders, developmental disorders, and traumatic injuries. After having her first child, she transitioned to the Early Intervention Program in New Jersey and worked primarily with children with various syndromes, global developmental delays, cerebral palsy, ASD and PDD/NOS. She also worked with multiple disabled children at the school of Cerebral Palsy of North Jersey.
Presently, Lisa is the Co-Founder and Clinical Director for BPTC. She has extensive experience in utilizing Sensory Integration (SI) and Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT) techniques to promote function and independence in children with poor sensory regulation, global developmental delays, and neurological disorders. For the various listening programs, she is an iLs Professional, a Solisten® Practitioner and a Therapeutic Listening provider. She received Aquatic Therapy training in 2009. She is in the process of her SIPT certification training. She is also certified in Handwriting without Tears. She loves and has worked with the pediatric population throughout her career and is experienced in applying ABA techniques or the DIR Model throughout the child's sessions. Lisa enjoys working closely with parents and other therapists in developing home programs and to strive to maximize each child's potential.
Victor, a parent of an autistic child, who has endured the hardships and joy of overseeing his son's therapies and progress wanted to provide a center based facility providing multiple services for children in one location. Knowing Lisa's aspiration and how much of a great resource and guide she was for his son's therapies, Victor enlisted her to open a multi-disciplinary center and not just a sensory gym. As a parent of a child with special needs, he realized the need for a facility that allowed families to receive most if not all of their therapeutic services at a single location and take advantage of a collaborative approach. For example, carrying over sensory integration techniques from an occupational therapy session to a speech therapy session in order to help the child remain focused and organized. The child's therapeutic progress can also be closely followed by all disciplines.
Kathleen Moran, a speech pathologist, is also part of the team. She began her career fourteen years ago as a Special Education teacher. She worked with children who had many different kinds of disabilities such as autism, cerebral palsy, and overall global delays. It seemed that the most challenging part for these children with all these different types of disabilities was the communication piece so she decided to return to school and get a masters degree in Speech/ Language Pathology. Over the years she studied many different techniques to help facilitate the communication process such as oral motor and PROMPT therapy to help meet the needs of each individual child. She is able to evaluate and provide the appropriate type or a combination of therapies to stimulate and language development. She also worked in a school setting with student ages three to twelve who have language based learning disabilities. She then became trained in the Orton Gillingham approach to teaching reading. It is a multi-sensory approach that incorporates the visual, auditory and tactile modalities that are so important for children who might have language or auditory/phonological processing delays.
Their vision to provide excellent services inspired them to launch Bergen Pediatric Therapy Center together. They wanted to be able to offer a centralized setting designed to meet the needs of the children while providing an environment of support and resource for the parents.
The entire staff's goal is to broaden the possibilities of all children and families they serve. They strive daily to provide excellent comprehensive services to each child by not only serving the child's needs but by also supporting all members of the family.
